I’d never read any Halo Jones but 2000AD is launching a new colored version in May, 2018 and I managed to get my hands on an advanced review copy. This type of highly serialized story-telling is fascinating to read, as it requires a dense style bereft of wasted story beat and despite this, each mini-chapter, complete with inciting incident and three acts, reads really briskly. The story is told in 5- and 6-page installments, as is typical of the story-telling in the weekly publication schedule of 2000AD. In 1984, while Alan Moore was already writing his famous Swamp Thing run, he teamed up with artist Ian Gibson in The Ballad of Halo Jones , the story of a teenage girl living in a poor floating hoop city with no possibility of a prosperous future, and quite probably a short life, due to the violence and crime and poverty where she lives.Īlan Moore and Ian Gibson did the equivalent of three black and white graphic novels worth of The Ballad of Halo Jones over the next few years. A few people have said that Halo Jones is Alan Moore’s greatest work, and it is frequently called Moore’s unknown classic. I lovingly crafted audio drama that will draw in new listeners while still keeping the stories loyal fan base happy.Talk long enough with people about the British comic publisher 2000AD and you’ll eventually get into a conversation about where The Ballad of Halo Jones fits in the ranking of Alan Moore’s work. This means that if you possess the original strips or graphic novel release you can also see Ian Gibson's original illustrations as the audio story unfolds. They have taken the original comic strip and used Alan Grant's script verbatim. On balance almost all of the actors turn in incredibly believable performances.Īn additional bonus for fans of the original story is that this isn't an adaptation where the producers have taken liberty with the original material. or just had some first rate voice direction, but almost immediately I warmed to her character. I don't know if she researched the role, or was a fan of the character. Sheila Atim is the perfect choice for Jones. Book III takes a darker turn and sees Jones as a soldier in a deadly intergalactic war. Book II followers her as she is employed as a stewardess on a year-long space voyage. Book I explores her origins in the ghetto known as The Hoop. The Ballad of Halo Jones: The Complete Edition charts the history of one of 2000 AD's most popular characters. Originally appearing in British comic 2000 AD from 1984 and split into three books, the story follows the legend of Halo Jones exploring her origins and rise to heroic historical figure.
